🏔️ Introduction: Prepare to Climb Africa’s Highest Peak
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m) is one of the world’s most rewarding bucket-list adventures — but success depends heavily on preparation, especially what you pack.
At Zan Isaac Tour and Safari, we’ve guided climbers from all over the world to the summit. To help you get ready, we’ve compiled a no-fluff list of 7 essential items you absolutely need to pack for your Kilimanjaro climb.
🎒 1. Layered Clothing System
Kilimanjaro has five climate zones, from tropical rainforest to arctic summit. The best way to stay comfortable is to dress in layers:
✅ Must-Pack Items:
- Base layer: moisture-wicking thermal tops & bottoms
- Mid-layer: fleece or insulated jacket
- Outer layer: windproof & waterproof jacket and pants
- Summit gear: insulated down jacket and thermal gloves
🌡️ Tip: Avoid cotton! It traps moisture and leads to hypothermia risks.
🥾 2. Quality Hiking Boots (Already Broken In)
Your feet will carry you across glaciers, scree, and muddy rainforest trails — so treat them well.
✅ What to look for:
- Waterproof hiking boots
- Mid- to high-ankle support
- Non-slip soles for rocky terrain
🛑 Do not wear brand-new boots. Break them in weeks before your climb.

🧢 3. Headlamp with Extra Batteries
You’ll begin your summit attempt around midnight, and visibility is crucial.
✅ Must-Have:
- Bright LED headlamp with adjustable straps
- 2–3 extra batteries (cold drains power fast)
🕯️ Why it matters: You’ll need both hands free to hike with poles and scramble rocks.
💧 4. Water Bottles or Hydration Bladder
Dehydration is a leading cause of altitude sickness. You’ll need to drink 3–4 liters per day.
✅ Recommended setup:
- 2 x 1L Nalgene bottles or
- 3L hydration bladder + 1 backup bottle
🔥 Tip: At high altitudes, insulated bottle covers prevent freezing.
🧤 5. Warm Accessories for the Summit Push
The summit night is bitterly cold. Keeping extremities warm is key to comfort and safety.
✅ Pack:
- Wool or synthetic thermal gloves + mittens
- Beanie or balaclava
- Buff/neck gaiter for dust and wind
- Thick wool socks for summit night
🧊 Temperatures at the top can drop below -15°C (5°F).
🏕️ 6. Sleeping Bag Rated for -10°C or Lower
Even though you’ll be camping in tents provided by us, the nights at higher altitudes are freezing.
✅ Pack a:
- 4-season sleeping bag (rated to -10°C to -15°C)
- Compression sack to reduce space in your bag
🛏️ If you don’t have one, Zan Isaac Tour and Safari offers high-quality sleeping bags for rent.
📋 7. Personal Medical & Hygiene Kit
Altitude, dust, and physical stress can take a toll. Be prepared with a basic kit that includes:
✅ Essentials:
- Diamox (for altitude)
- Ibuprofen/paracetamol
- Antiseptic cream & blister plasters
- Hand sanitizer
- Lip balm with SPF
- Sunscreen (minimum SPF 30)
- Quick-dry towel
- Wet wipes (there are no showers!)
🎯 Bonus: What NOT to Pack
🚫 Avoid:
- Heavy books/laptops
- Jeans or cotton clothes
- Expensive jewelry
- Drones (require permits)
Weight matters — porters carry your gear (max 15kg). Stick to essentials.
